Honor Guard

Responsibilities

The York County Department of Fire and Life Safety Honor Guard was formed in January 1997 as the second of the department's special teams. The Honor Guard exists to properly honor members (active and retired) of the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety that pass away. In the time since its organization, the Honor Guard has become a valuable public relations tool for York County and a goodwill ambassador for the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety.

The Honor Guard has represented York County and the men and women of the Department of Fire and Life Safety at fire service funerals and memorial services throughout the country, from New York City to South Carolina and across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Members of the Honor Guard have served as family escorts at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Emmittsburg, Maryland. The Honor Guard has opened many dedications, ceremonies and conventions throughout York County and the Commonwealth of Virginia by presenting the Colors.

Services

The Honor Guard has participated in numerous multi-jurisdictional Honor Guard services, and many members are often asked to coordinate and command these efforts throughout the Commonwealth. It is with great pride and the humblest of intentions that the members of the Department's Honor Guard represent the department, York County, and the history, heritage, and future of the fire and rescue service. When the Honor Guard presents colors, they proudly display the flags of the United States, Commonwealth of Virginia, York County, and the Department of Fire and Life Safety.

Members

The Honor Guard is comprised of department members that serve daily as firefighters and medics, answering calls and assisting the citizens, businesses, and visitors of York County. There duties and training related to serving as a member of the Honor Guard are above and beyond that of their normal duties.
