Enjoy the Sights and Sounds of Christmas at this Weekend's Holiday Events
Experience An Enchanted Evening on Main Street
Ready, set, glow! Tonight (12/8) is the night to embark on the magic of the holiday season during An Enchanted Evening on Main Street from 5 to 9 p.m. View sparkling lights; listen to jovial music from Dickens Trio, Clan MacCool Band, and the Williamsburg Youth Orchestra; watch a performance by Drunken Weasels and Morris Dancers; enjoy classic Christmas stories; taste seasonal fare and sweet treats; marvel at the nativity scene with live animals; and more, including a couple of surprises! Details are available on the Visit Yorktown website.
Indulge Your Senses at the Mistletoe Market
Holiday traditions continue Saturday (12/9) with the return of the annual Mistletoe Market. Shop for irresistible goodies like desserts, meats, seafood, drinks, snacks, wine, jewelry, and more from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Riverwalk Landing. Snag last-minute gifts or stocking stuffers such as books, glassware, mittens, and purses. While you’re there, embrace the spirit of the holiday season by signing cards for heroes, making colonial ornaments or kids’ crafts, and watching an ice carving demonstration. Trackless train rides will be offered, so hop on board! Don’t forget to visit with Santa Claus and join in the fun of the Toyland Parade at 1:30 p.m. This Week at the Market has all the when’s and where’s.
Free Gift Wrapping at the Tabb Library
It’s the season of giving. However, not everyone enjoys wrapping presents. Let the library do it for you! Drop in to the Tabb Library on Tuesday (12/12) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for free gift wrapping. No more than six small to medium gifts may be wrapped. Oddly shaped or oversized items are not eligible for wrapping. The session may end early if materials run out. For more information, call 757-890-5120 or send an email to the library staff.
Sidewalk Open Houses Continue Next Two Weeks
Last week’s open house about the Grafton Drive sidewalk project was a huge success! Staff gathered citizen input that will be invaluable when planning the layout of the walkway. A meeting is scheduled for Monday (12/11) from 5 to 7 p.m. about the proposed Lakeside Drive sidewalk. Staff will review and discuss the plan, answer questions, and welcome citizen comments. The open house will be held in the Public Works Office, 105 Service Drive. Those unable to attend may email their questions or comments to the County. Please include “Lakeside Drive Sidewalk” in the subject line.
Deadline Extended for 4-H Teen Counselor Applications
It’s a busy time of year, and deadlines can often be overlooked. York/Poquoson Virginia Cooperative Extension Office wants all interested teens ages 14-18 to have an opportunity to apply to become a 4-H Teen Counselor (ages 15-18) or Counselors-in-Training (age 14). Therefore, the deadline to apply has been extended to Wednesday, December 13, at 5 p.m. Application materials and more information are available online. Don’t miss this great opportunity!
Volunteers Needed for Environmental Focus Group Next WeekThe National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) is seeking volunteers to serve in focus groups to better understand recreation along the York River and its surrounding parks, including reasons why people may not visit these places. By participating in a focus group, volunteers will have the opportunity to voice their opinions and contribute to the development of the survey. Each session lasts approximately one hour, and light snacks will be provided. Focus groups will be held in Gloucester Point and West Point. To volunteer, send an email no later than Monday (12/11). NCCOS was formed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 1999 and is the focal point for NOAA’s coastal ocean science efforts.
