Penguins are definitely the cutest winter animal and I dare anyone to challenge me on this! Now you can make your very own pet penguin with a recycled water bottle, some scraps of craft foam, and a hot glue gun. Or you can make your very own penguin army!

This craft kit is available now (while supplies last) at the Youth Services desk at either the Yorktown or Tabb branch. Make sure to call ahead to ensure that a craft kit is available before heading to the library. You can call Tabb at 757-890-5110 and Yorktown at 757-890-3236.

Supplies included in the kit:

• Template
• ½ sheet of black craft foam
• ¼ sheet of orange craft foam
• 2 googly eyes
• 2 mini pompoms
• 3 in pipe cleaner
• 9”x1” felt
• Small bag of glitter

Supplies needed:

• Hot glue gun (or regular glue)
• Small water bottle (8 oz size works best)
• Filling for the penguin (cotton balls, water and glitter, colorful pomp oms, etc)
• scissors

Instructions:

1. Cut the label off of the water bottle.
2. Cut out the template pieces, trace onto the black and orange craft foam, and cut out. Set aside. 
3. Trace the lid onto the black craft foam and cut out. Glue it to the top of the lid.
4. Fill your water bottle with whatever you choose. 
5. Take the 4”x3/4” piece of foam and glue to the neck of the bottle. Glue on the googly eyes, nose, and feet.
6. Cut the slit in each wing (as shown on the template pieces). Put a large blob of glue above the cut and press that to the side of the bottle to attach the wing. Repeat with the other side. (You can either let the wings stick out or have the wrap around the back of the penguin by using more glue.)
7. Wrap the felt around the neck of the penguin and glue it down. Bend the pipe cleaner to make a curve and glue each end down, then attach the pompoms, to make earmuffs.
