Mental Health for teens is a tough subject. Your library can be a good resource for finding materials about a topic that you're not quite ready to discuss yet, and hopefully prepare you for taking the step of asking for help. For this month's BookTalk video, Jessica and Susan are sharing some fiction books that address mental health and teenagers, in both positive and negative ways. To see a list of these titles, check out our Mental Health Month Book List. Then scroll down to watch the embedded video, or visit the York County Public Library YouTube Channel.

If you need help

We strongly encourage you to use the following resources if you are struggling. You don't have to do this alone.

  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
    1-800-273-TALK (8255)
Provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • NAMI.org (National Alliance on Mental Illness)
This website has a children and teens section with resources on how to help a friend and how to take charge of your own mental health.
  • Mental Health America of Virginia "Warm Line"
    1-866-400-MHAV (6428)
This is not a crisis line and should not be used in an emergency. This can be used to provide peer support, to help identify coping strategies and local resources, or just to vent. The peers who answer our Warm Line listen with compassion and provide non-judgmental support.

Take care of each other, and most importantly, take care of yourself.
