The Rest of the Story: The British Soldier of the American Revolution

In Yorktown, the terms Redcoats and Loyalists often receive an eye roll, sneer, or chuckle. For many years, the 18th-century British military has been mocked, criticized, or even overlooked in history books and Hollywood. However, this is not entirely fair. As the old saying goes, there are two sides to every story, and a fascinating event in September tries to shed light on the British perspective. Yorktown 1781 Before the Siege will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 6 and 7, on Historic Main Street and at the Yorktown Battlefield.

Staff Pick: Farmers Markets, Festivals, and Family Fun

Ashley Sopko, Tourism Communications Coordinator for York County Economic and Tourism Development, is looking forward to making autumn memories with her family in Yorktown. “Fall is one of the best times of year to visit Yorktown!” says Ashley. “It’s absolutely my favorite season to shop at Yorktown Market Days. The air is crisp and there’s a nice breeze blowing in off the York River–such a refreshing change after a hot and humid summer. I look forward to buying pumpkins, apples, pies, squash, sweet potatoes, and handcrafted candles that make my home feel cozy. My kids have the best time at the Fall and Harvest Festivals! Face painting, petting zoos, and balloon artists light up their little faces with pure joy.”
