How Gen Z Can Celebrate VA250 in Historic Yorktown

As Virginia prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, Historic Yorktown is the place for Gen Z to experience excitement! This blog will be a useful guide for making the most of VA250 over the next year. From capturing moments on social media to attending immersive experiences, we have fun, creative ways for the younger generation to get involved and celebrate the past and present!

2025-2026 Events:

Civic Season – Annually, late June to early July

Civic Season was created to help connect the past and present with storytelling, reflecting, and action. Gen Z can explore thought-provoking exhibits and hands-on learning experiences at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, while discovering what civic responsibility means in today’s world. This is the perfect mix of history and purpose for the younger generation! Immersive activities are offered daily and are free with museum admission. 

Independence Day Celebration – Annually, July 4

What’s more iconic than spending your 4th of July where American freedom was won? Grab your besties, wear a patriotic ’fit, and get ready for the celebration vibes! Yorktown has it all – parades, live music, food trucks, and fireworks. Start bright and early at the Patriotic Parade at 9:00 a.m., chill at the beach throughout the day, and end your evening with fireworks at 9:15 p.m.! 

1781 Before the Siege – Annually, early September

Picture this: Costumes, military drills, and hands-on experiences that make it feel like 1781 again. Did you time travel? No! It’s just Yorktown’s Before the Siege event. You have the opportunity to see what life was like in British camps before American and French forces arrived. Yorktown’s Historic Main Street will be unrecognizable!

“Fresh Views of the American Revolution” – October 18, 2025, to May 3, 2026

The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown will have a special VA250 exhibit that allows observers to discover new perspectives on the ideals and legacies of the American Revolution through the folk art of Oscar de Mejo created during the 1976 Bicentennial. Its modern-day takes will certainly give you the opportunity to learn something new.

Yorktown Day – Annually, October 19

Every October 19, Yorktown celebrates the victory that ended the Revolutionary War. This occasion is commemorated with a parade, wreath-laying ceremonies, and even live reenactment.  This gives a meaningful way to honor those in the past and how they shaped our present. Think cozy sweater weather, colorful leaves, and potential content everywhere! 

Sail Yorktown Festival – June 12-14, 2026

From June 12-14, 2026, Yorktown’s waterfront will be getting a glow up with an international fleet of massive, picture-worthy ships docking right in the 757. Witness breathtaking tall ships and military vessels as they grace the York River. Throughout the weekend, enjoy a spectacular Parade of Sail, free deck tours, live entertainment, reenactments, live firings, military drills, and more.  This gives you a chance to get a little bit of history with your coastal vibes! 

Each of these special exhibits and events in Historic Yorktown over the coming year highlights the significance of the Declaration of Independence and Yorktown’s pivotal role in securing the nation’s freedom. Experience the voices from 1776 through Gen Z students performing dramatic readings or modern remixes of this invaluable document.
