Your Weekend Plans: Fun, Garden Plots to Rent, Awards & More!

Grow Together in Our Community Gardens!
Do you love to garden but don’t have the space at home? Join your neighbors and grow your green thumb in one of York County’s Community Gardens! Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just getting started, this is a great opportunity to connect with others, cultivate fresh produce, and enjoy the outdoors. Garden plots are available for rent at Charles Brown Park and the McReynolds Athletic Complex.  Applications are now being accepted in person at the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office. Plots are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis and are open to York County residents for a small fee.  Don't miss your chance to dig in and grow with your community! Kick Off June in Yorktown: Markets, Music, Boat Races & History on the River!
Yorktown Market Days are the perfect way to start your weekend! Join us from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, to enjoy beautiful views of the York River, live music with the Scrapper T Duo, and a wide variety of vendors. From seasonal produce and fresh baked goods to intricate jewelry and beautiful woodwork, there is something for everyone! The free, accessible Yorktown Trolley will be in operation beginning at 10 a.m. during this event.

The second annual Yorktown Workboat Races are back on Sunday, June 1. Watch as competitors race small, medium, and large workboats along the York River. There will be an opening ceremony at 12:30 p.m. followed by a boat parade. At 1:30 p.m., the races begin at the Riverwalk Landing Fishing Pier and end at the Coleman Bridge. Be sure to stick around for the last race of the day — the King of the Bay Race — featuring big workboats.

Workboat Races

Calling all Parrot Heads! We've got the Tiki Bar Band playing from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on the Riverwalk Landing Stage for the next Sounds of Summer Concert on Thursday, June 5. A fixture on the Virginia Beach oceanfront for years, the band plays hits from the 70s and 80s, Jimmy Buffett, and beach music.

Free tours of the VA250 Mobile Museum will be available from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 6. It will be stationed in the parking lot of the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. The mobile museum brings key stories of Virginia’s rich history to schools, museums, local events, fairs, and more, highlighting every region of the state. 

Fire and Life Safety Awards
York County Fire and Life Safety is pleased to announce that it has received several accolades during EMS Week, May 18-24, 2025. “I extend my congratulations to all the award winners who strive every day to help our citizens, businesses, and visitors,” said Fire Chief Steve Kopczynski. “I am proud of these and all members of the Department of Fire and Life Safety who strive to provide excellent service to the community and who continue to work toward improving their skills and our life-saving programs.” Read the press release here. 

Hurricane Season Begins
A very active Atlantic hurricane season is forecast this year, which runs from June 1 to November 30. Now is the time to prepare for a storm in case one approaches our region. York County’s Fire & Life Safety website contains helpful information on how to prepare an emergency kit for you and your family, determining your risk, evacuation information, as well as links to Know Your Zone VA, National Hurricane Center, and more.

Senior Center Workshops and Programs for June Now Posted 
Every month, the Senior Center of York adds new programs and events, and also brings back popular ones like exercise and art classes, lively health workshops, and special presentations. Some of June’s events include a CPR/AED Awareness Seminar, Culture Day and more. If you are interested in finding out more about the classes and programs, sign up for the monthly calendar email or view it on the Senior Center website.

Additional Notes for the Week . . . The VPPSA Compost Facility will be closed on Thursday, June 12.  The closure is for the Compost Facility only, the rest of the Waste Management Facility will be open. The Compost Facility will reopen on Friday, June 13.
